Life can throw confusing problems at a man—issues that seem minor but carry major consequences if misjudged. The Internet and modern life are built on urgency and immediacy—everything screams “right now.” In the rush, we often become reactive, thinking fast and acting without reflection. There’s a gritty old saying: “You’ve got to separate the rat turds from the peppercorns.” Jesus gives us His own version when He warns of the wheat and the chaff. The point is the same: some choices that appear small carry eternal weight. Details matter, and only the prudent man learns to slow down, discern, and judge rightly.
This is why every man must build the Virtue of Prudence. Prudence is the disciplined use of reason: pausing, observing, studying, and then acting with care. Jesus Himself is deliberate—never hurried, never sloppy. He commands, “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Mt 10:16). A prudent man avoids impulsiveness and refuses to trust his gut more than God’s truth. Instead, he learns to Think Twice and Act Once. When a man embraces this habit, he becomes a steady guide for his family and an unshakable force for good in a world of confusion.
If you’re overwhelmed or pressed to decide, don’t guess—pray, think, and act slowly. Return to Scripture, seek wise counsel, and avoid decisions when you’re tired or emotional. Remember, your family is watching. Your judgment will either confuse them or form them. Make your choices a model worth imitating. And when the fog rolls in, ask Jesus for light. He will help you separate what nourishes from what corrupts.
Challenge
Today, when a decision confronts you—big or small—pause. Step back, breathe, and force yourself to wait. Ask: Am I thinking twice before I act once? Write down the choice, pray over it, and only act after you’ve sought clarity from God.
Prayer
Jesus, Divine Wisdom, I want to be a man of Prudence. Help me think clearly and act boldly in truth. Teach me to be steady, alert, and wise in every choice I make. When I am tempted to rush or react in fear, calm me and guide me. May I lead others with clarity and conviction, always grounded in You. Today, I will pause before every major decision, asking You for light before I act. Amen.
