What Pornography Is
To begin to battle against pornography, it is important to define it and to be aware of how pornography permeates modern culture.
The word “pornography” comes from ancient Greek words meaning the depiction or description of a prostitute, someone who offers sexual acts for sale. The Catholic Church condemns pornography as a grave offense because it perverts the marital act, degrades its participants, and harms those who consume it (CCC 2354).
Pornography is now delivered primarily via the internet through general entertainment and media sites, social media sites, and pornography sites. Pornography ranges from mild sexual content to the most extreme, depraved sexual acts, organized and presented in many subcategories.
Pornography is delivered in many forms that cater to the particular lusts of people:
Audio – Music with sexually explicit content and audio of sexual acts.
Written – Erotic stories, forums, and chat boards.
Images – Nudity, sexualized modeling (suggestive, swimsuit, lingerie), immodest social media, and sexual acts.
Videos and Movies – Streaming movies with explicit sexual content and hardcore videos of sexual acts on porn websites.
Gaming – Pornography-based video gaming.
Virtual Reality Porn – Pornography viewing using virtual reality headsets.
Interactive Pornography – Webcams with live streaming, subscriptions, and direct messaging/chatting.
Producing and Sharing Pornography – Forwarding or making explicit photos and videos, sexting, posting sexual content, live-streaming, and generating AI-built pornography.
Every man who wishes to battle against pornography must battle to eradicate all forms from his life.
