To begin to battle porn, a man must realize that viewing porn is a bad habit and that bad habits can be broken and replaced with good habits
Understanding How to Form Habits
Before a man can successfully engage in the battle against pornography, he first needs to understand that the viewing of pornography is a habit. The repeated viewing of pornography is not merely an isolated act; it becomes a learned pattern that can grow stronger through repetition.
The Church teaches that a man is called to grow in virtue—good habits—and to battle vice—bad habits (CCC 1803, 1833). Virtues are formed and strengthened through repeated good actions, while vices are reinforced through repeated sinful choices. Because of this, lasting change usually requires more than regret after failure; it requires the patient replacement of bad habits with good ones.
Understanding how habits form is, therefore, a critical step in breaking destructive patterns and building new ways of living. Five basic parts of habit formation are often involved: Desire, Stimulus, Response, Reward, and Repetition.
Desire – Desire can be simply described as what a man craves or what he wants. Desire may be directed toward gaining or experiencing something good, or toward avoiding something harmful. In that sense, desire can move toward a positive good or away from a perceived evil.
To build a new habit, a man must first desire the thing he hopes to obtain. If a man desires to become Chaste, he should learn the blessings and benefits of Chastity and intentionally grow his longing for that good.
At the same time, to break a bad habit, a man must reject the desires that previously ruled him. To grow in Chastity, he must learn to hate pornography and the Vice of lust by recognizing the grave damage they do to his relationship with God, to his own soul, and to others.
Stimulus – A stimulus is a trigger that leads a man toward action. For example, a suggestive advertisement may trigger a man to seek further arousal through pornography. Many habits begin not with a decision, but with a cue that awakens desire and moves behavior.
To build a good habit, a man should create positive stimuli in his life. A man seeking freedom from pornography may surround himself with reminders of the blessings of Chastity, the mercy of Christ in the Crucifix, the Rosary, or a statue of St. Joseph on his desk.
To break a bad habit, a man must identify and remove the triggers that lead him into sin. If he wants to battle pornography, he should cut off the stimuli connected to that habit, including certain websites, apps, media, routines, and environments where temptation is more likely to arise.
Response – A response is how a man thinks and behaves after he has been presented with a stimulus. For example, when a man sees a suggestive image, he may immediately choose to click, linger, or seek more. The response is the action taken after the trigger appears.
To build a good habit, a man should plan positive responses in advance. A man seeking Chastity should commit to avoiding the near occasion of sin, strengthen himself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically, and prepare a fail-safe plan for exactly what he will do if confronted with temptation. Prepared responses make victory more likely.
At the same time, to break a bad habit, a man must make definitive choices about how he will not respond. He should draw bright lines he refuses to cross. If even mild forms of pornography appear, he should have already decided to turn away immediately, close the screen, leave the situation, and refuse to negotiate with temptation.
Reward – The reward is what a man receives after responding to a stimulus in a certain way. For the man trapped in pornography, the perceived reward may be sexual excitement, escape, distraction, or temporary relief. That reward helps reinforce the habit and makes repetition more likely.
To build a good habit, a man should strengthen the rewards connected to the habits he wants to form. A man seeking Chastity can regularly reflect on the freedom, peace, integrity, and joy that come from living free of shame, guilt, secrecy, and enslavement.
To break a bad habit, a man must also understand the true negative rewards of sin. The man who desires Chastity should meditate deeply on the real damage pornography causes in his relationship with God, his mind, his body, his relationships, and his soul.
Repetition – Repetition is the continued practice of the same thoughts and actions until they become more natural to a man. Habits are strengthened through repeated patterns, whether for good or for evil.
To build a good habit, a man must repeatedly practice the right patterns of desire, stimulus, response, and reward. In the battle for Chastity, a man who begins to experience success should continue the daily practices that help him avoid pornography and embrace purity. What is repeated consistently becomes stronger over time.
In contrast, a man is far more likely to fall back into a bad habit when he abandons disciplined routines. If a man has struggled with pornography and becomes lax in the practices that helped him avoid it, he becomes much more vulnerable to returning to that sin.
