The Habits of Chastity and Lust
For most men, one of the key spiritual battles of life is learning to use their God-given sexual drive in conformity with God’s will.
The Virtue of Chastity is a good habit by which a man rightly orders his sexual desires, builds heroic sexual self-control, and grows into the freedom and joy of purity. Through Chastity, desire comes under reason, grace, and love, allowing a man to live with greater integrity and peace.
The Vice of lust is a bad habit that enslaves a man to sexual desire and disordered pleasure. It harms his relationship with God, damages his mental, physical, and emotional health, and alienates him from others. What promises pleasure often leads instead to bondage, division, and unhappiness.
God’s Gift of Sexuality – God created sexuality as a good and holy gift ordered to love, marriage, and the gift of children. It is meant to express faithful self-giving and the fruitful union of husband and wife. Sexuality is not evil; it is a powerful gift meant to be governed according to God’s design.
Chastity Builds Freedom and Joy – The Church teaches that Temperance helps a man govern pleasures rightly and rule his appetites instead of being ruled by them (CCC 1809). In the area of sexuality, this battle is often fought between lust and Chastity.
The Catechism teaches that Chastity is the successful integration of sexuality within the person (CCC 2337). It brings desires, thoughts, and actions under reason, grace, and love. In marriage, it supports faithful, fruitful, and self-giving love. Outside marriage, it is lived through purity, modesty, and abstinence. Chastity is not repression; it is ordered strength and freedom.
The joy of Chastity is a clean heart, a peaceful mind, growing self-command, and the freedom to love rightly. A man is no longer enslaved by his sexual cravings. He gains integrity, deeper peace, and greater capacity to serve God, give his best to his wife and children, and more fully love others.
Lust Damages the Whole Man – The Catechism teaches that lust is a disordered craving for sexual pleasure and the misuse of sexuality (CCC 2351). Lust turns desire inward toward self-gratification. It can lead to pornography, masturbation, fornication, adultery, and other sexual sins. Pornography is a common modern form of lust that trains desire toward fantasy, selfish craving, and repeated habit.
The fruits of lust are shame, secrecy, inner division, weakened self-control, and deeper slavery to desire. What promises pleasure often leaves emptiness, regret, and renewed craving.
Lust and pornography also wound a man’s relationship with God, damage his mind and body, and weaken his ability to fulfill his duties to family and society. Sin clouds judgment, drains strength, distorts relationships, and can separate a man from the life of grace.
