Introduction
On the way to Heaven, a man must truly believe Jesus is the Savior of Man and become awed by Him, believe he personally needs Jesus to save him from sin and death, and live a a zealous Catholic life, the only sure way Jesus promises a man can become a saint and find true and lasting happiness on earth and in Heaven.
The first step and foundation of an unshakeable faith in Jesus is to become convinced He is indeed the Savior of Man. To become convinced, a man must dive deeply into the astounding life of Jesus Christ as described by the eyewitnesses in the Gospels; these eyewitnesses were the first to become awed by Jesus Christ. An objective and open-hearted man who deeply reflects upon the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ astounding teachings and works in the Gospels will also become awed by Jesus, and his awe will lead the man to become convinced Jesus is not a mere man, but the Son of God and Savior of Man.
The word “awe” is a word that has been dumbed down in modern language to the point of being almost meaningless; “everything” is “awesome.” The true meaning of the word “awe” comes from the Greek, akhos meaning ‘pain, grief’ and ‘dread mixed with veneration’, and to be ‘profoundly reverential.’
The prudent man will reserve the word “awe” for things which have overwhelming scale or power, are transcendent, are incomprehensible, result in emotional intensity and are very rare; Jesus, the Savior of Man, meets this criterion for using the word “awe” because He is the Son of God and the Savior of Man. By reflecting deeply upon the life of Jesus Christ a man will develop a holy fear and profound reverence for the Divinity, Humanity and Mission of Jesus.
While the persistent habit of simply reading the Gospels with the help of the Holy Spirit can lead a man to become convinced by Christ, it is fruitful to have some tools to help draw out the astounding eyewitness evidence recorded in the Gospels that Jesus is truly the Savior of Man.
Becoming Awed by the Divinity, Humanity and Mission of Jesus Christ
One helpful approach to grow in awe of Jesus and become convinced He is the Son of God and Savior of Man is to reflect upon how He demonstrates His Divinity, Humanity and Mission in the Gospels:
Divinity
The Divinity of Jesus can be considered by studying His Divine Identity, Divine Knowledge, and Divine Power which prove the mysterious reality that Jesus is a Divine Person with power and knowledge which exceed what is possible by a human man.
Humanity
The Humanity of Jesus can be described by considering His Relationships, Human Body, Personality, Knowledge, and Virtues. By reflecting upon Christ’s Humanity, it becomes clear that Jesus is no ordinary man, and in fact Jesus is the greatest man who has ever lived for He is the Perfect Man.
Mission
The Mission of Jesus can be understood by reflecting upon His Divine Offices as the Divine King, Divine Prophet, and Divine Priest. The Gospels provide a powerful testimony to the astounding way Jesus accomplishes His Mission to save mankind by the establishment of His Kingdom and His Holy Catholic Church as the exclusive way to lead men to salvation.
