Stagnation is the opposite of growth. The word comes from the Latin stagnare, meaning “to stand still, to be motionless.” But it’s more than just being stuck. Stagnation brings decay—just like still water breeds rot, a stagnant soul slowly dies. If you’ve ever felt like your life isn’t moving forward—spiritually, mentally, or relationally—you’re not alone. But you’re also not meant to stay there.
Jesus never calls men to stagnate. His parables are filled with the language of growth—of seeds, soil, fruit, and harvest. Stagnation is not in the vocabulary of Heaven. Jesus calls you to life, and life means growth. He says, “Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” (Jn 15:2, RSVCE)
Stagnation isn’t just exhausting—it’s dangerous. It leads to apathy, then hopelessness, and finally spiritual death. But here’s the good news: Jesus doesn’t expect you to fix it alone. He fulfills the entire law and the prophets (Mt 5:17), and by uniting yourself to Him—the True Vine—you can grow again. His Spirit flows through every man who abides in Him.
If you’re stuck, don’t try to force your way out. Ask Jesus for help. Discern one area of your life where you feel stagnant. Then ask: “Lord, where do You want me to grow?” The first fruit of that prayer is faith. The second is hope. The third is action.

Today, I will discern one area of my life where Jesus is calling me to grow in fruitfulness, and I will make a clear, specific commitment to take one step forward with His help.
