Stop Using Your Phone as a Pacifier

If you are reading this, you are a full-grown man—long past the point of needing a pacifier. A baby cries and is calmed by a “passy,” but only for a time. If a baby becomes dependent, he cannot sleep, cannot remain calm, and will wail until it is in his mouth. Just as a child must be weaned from his mother, he must also be weaned from his pacifier. The word pacifier literally means “to make passive.” Too many men have traded one “passy” for another—the phone. We use it to soothe boredom, loneliness, anxiety, and fatigue. And in doing so, we become passive drones, infantilized by a glowing screen, addicted to distraction instead of maturing into strength.

Jesus warns against this cycle of false comfort: “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness” (Mt 6:22–23, RSVCE). Feeding your eyes with trivialities is like feeding a child candy—it never nourishes, it only pacifies. The Vice of Curiosity keeps you restless, always searching for another click, another scroll, another fix. The Catechism reminds us that only God can satisfy the deep desire for happiness He has placed within us (CCC 1718–1723). If you keep pacifying yourself with a phone, you will never face reality, never hear God’s voice, and never grow into the man Christ calls you to be.

The way forward is the Virtue of Temperance. Temperance trains you to reject false comforts and embrace maturity. It teaches you to sit in discomfort, to turn to prayer instead of pacification, and to take up your cross instead of fleeing from it. Practically, this means refusing to check your phone whenever you feel restless, limiting its use in moments of stress, and deliberately choosing silence, Scripture, or real human connection instead. To be weaned from the pacifier of the phone is not to lose joy—it is to gain strength and discover true consolation in Christ.

Challenge: Today, notice the moments when you reach for your phone to soothe yourself. Instead of pacifying, pray. Instead of scrolling, sit in silence. Begin to wean yourself from passivity and grow into maturity in Christ.

Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal Wisdom, give me the Virtue of Temperance to reject the false comfort of my phone. Deliver me from passivity and childish dependence. Today, I will stop using my phone as a pacifier and embrace the strength You give through prayer and the Cross. Amen.
