Stop Chasing Your Dreams. Start Following Jesus.

We live in the age of dreams. Screens surround us with endless images of what life could be—fame, thrills, wealth, and pleasure. But these are not dreams of greatness; they are trivial pursuits. The media fuels this false imagination with celebrities who are famous for nothing, influencers selling illusions, and a virtual world that dangles quick pleasures through games, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. Men are lured to waste their lives chasing shadows instead of living for what is real and eternal.

Think about it: the dream car, the fantasy girl, the lottery win, the perfect retirement of endless leisure. Add to that the lure of winning fake battles online, living through a digital avatar, or curating a social media persona to impress strangers. None of these paths lead to lasting joy—they lead to emptiness. Jesus never commands, “Chase your dream.” Instead, He speaks directly: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23, RSVCE). After His Resurrection, His words to Peter were the same: “Follow me” (Jn 21:19, RSVCE).

Worldly dreams always fade, but the eternal dream of happiness in Heaven endures. Jesus has a plan for you—but you will never know it unless you follow Him. Peter had his own plans, but Jesus cut through them with a greater command: follow Me. The same is true for you. Don’t let your life be consumed by the empty fantasies of this age. Lift your eyes to the dream that matters most—the eternal joy of union with God. That dream will not disappoint.

Challenge

Today, take inventory of your dreams. Which ones are worldly, centered on possessions or pleasure? Which ones point toward God and eternity? Ask Jesus to strip away empty fantasies and fix your heart on the only dream that lasts—eternal life with Him.

Pray: Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help me build the Virtue of Prudence so I may discern wisely, reject false dreams, and consistently choose to follow You in my daily life. Break me free from the illusions of this age. Teach me to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. Today, I will stop chasing empty dreams and start following You. Amen.
