Seek the Freedom of Excellence

Anyone who has tried to learn an instrument, sport, or craft knows how painful the beginning can be. At first, the lack of skill feels like a prison. Early efforts are clumsy and awkward—just watch a child at a first piano recital or soccer game. You admire the courage, but you also see the frustration. This is why fathers, teachers, and coaches push children to keep practicing. Only with discipline do they grow in skill. And only with skill do they begin to taste freedom. What once felt impossible becomes second nature, and the man who trains diligently discovers the joy of mastery.

This is thrilling to witness. A virtuoso guitarist who can improvise without hesitation, an athlete who seems to move effortlessly, a craftsman who shapes beauty with ease—all of them display the fruit of years of discipline. They endured frustration, fought through laziness, and stayed the course when others quit. In contrast, those who refuse discipline remain forever limited, bound by weakness and mediocrity. Their desires outstrip their abilities, and their lack of effort keeps them stuck. Excellence is never accidental. It requires both desire and discipline, and only those who cultivate it can produce great fruits in their lives.

The same is true in the spiritual life. Holiness is the pursuit of spiritual excellence. The man who seeks to imitate Jesus cannot drift into greatness—he must train daily in virtue and rely on grace. Jesus said: “To everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Mt 25:29, RSVCE). The Virtue of Diligence, a part of Temperance, is what makes spiritual excellence possible. Diligence turns distraction into focus, laziness into labor, and weakness into strength. Just as the musician becomes free to create through years of practice, so too the diligent man becomes free to love heroically, endure patiently, and live joyfully in Christ.

Challenge: Today, identify one area of spiritual laziness—prayer, resisting temptation, or serving others—and take one disciplined step forward. Practice the Virtue of Diligence, a part of Temperance, and begin the daily pursuit of spiritual excellence.

Pray: Holy Spirit, help me build the Virtue of Diligence, a part of Temperance. Train me to labor steadily, multiply the gifts You have given me, and grow into the excellence of holiness. Today, I will practice diligence as I seek to imitate Jesus more perfectly. Amen.
