Prayers for a Husband

A Husband’s Prayer

O Gracious Father, Maker and Preserver of Heaven and earth, Who in the beginning instituted matrimony, thereby foreshadowing the mystical union of the Church with our Savior Christ, Who in the time of His ministry upon earth, honored marriage with His first miracle: enable me, I pray to You, by Your grace to live in holiness and purity with the wife, [my bride’s name], Whom You have given me.

Mortify in me all violence of earthy passion, all selfishness and inconsiderateness [here, mention any sin which is causing suffering], that I may love [my bride’s name] as Christ loved His Church, cherish and comfort her as my own body, and have as great care for her happiness as for my own. Grant that we may live in peace, without contention; in unity without discord.

[If blessed with children: Give us, O Lord, discreet hearts and understanding minds, to bring up our children in Your faith and fear, that they may be obedient to You and to Your Commandments, and to all You require of them in duty towards us, their parents.]

And give us, O Lord, the ability to maintain ourselves and our family accord to that rank and calling where You have placed us, without excess or vainglory, in singleness and pureness of heart. Grant this for Jesus Christ’s sake, to Whom with You and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Prayers for a Father

Prayers for a Catholic Family

God of goodness and mercy, we commend to Your all-powerful protection our home, our family, and all that we possess. Bless us all as You blessed the Holy Family of Nazareth.

O Jesus, our most holy Redeemer, by the love with which You became man in order to save us, by the mercy through which You died for us upon the Cross, we beg You to bless our home, our family, our household. Preserve us from all evil and from the snares of men; preserve us from lightening and hail and fire, from flood and from rage of the elements; preserve us from Your wrath, from the hatred and the evil designs of our enemies, from plague, famine and war. Let not one of us die without the Holy Sacraments. Bless us, that we may bravely confess that faith by which we are sanctified, that we may never falter in our hope, even amid pain and affliction, and that we ever grow in love for You and in charity toward our neighbor.

O Jesus, bless us, protect us.

O Mary, Mother of grace and mercy, bless us, protect us against the evil spirit; lead us by the hand through this vale of tears; reconcile us with your Divine Son; commend us to Him, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

St. Joseph, foster-father of our Savior, guardian of His most holy Mother, head of the Holy Family, intercede for us, bless and protect our home always.

St. Michael, defend us against all the malice of Hell. St. Gabriel, intercede that we may ever seek the holy will of God. St. Raphael, preserve us from ill health and all danger to life. Holy Guardian Angels, keep us day and night on the path to salvation. Holy Patrons, pray for us before the throne of God.

Bless this house, You, God our Almighty Father, Who did create us; You, Divine Son, Who suffered for us on the Cross; You, Holy Spirit, Who sanctified us in Baptism. May God, in His three Divine Persons, preserve our bodies, purify our souls, direct our hearts, and lead us to life everlasting. Glory be to the Father, glory be to the Son, glory be to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Father’s Blessing of His Children

Pray this prayer of blessing (Num 6:24-26) over each of your children each day, placing your hands on their heads, and saying:

May the Lord bless you and keep you, may The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you, may The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. And I bless you in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit [trace the sign of the Cross on the child’s forehead]. Amen.

A Father’s Prayer

Almighty God, the Father and Maker of us all, Who by Your blessing and goodness have called and made me a father of children, be blessed to accept my hearty thanksgiving and devout praise for making me a father. Grant me Your Heavenly grace and assistance so to train my children to awe, love and serve You, so as they advance in years, they may grow in grace and may be saved and be received into Heaven by Your grace.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Litany of Catholic Fatherhood

Blessed Trinity, I beg You, help me become a faithful and sacrificial husband and father for my bride and children that they may come to know, love and serve You and to build Your Holy Catholic Church, Lord, hear my prayer.

That I build a deep and abiding unity with my bride through daily prayer with her, by making many sacrifices to help and bless her, by receiving and giving loving correction so we might grow in holiness, and by pursuing beautiful perpetual courtship with her…

That I establish and maintain just authority and order in my family and build a robust Catholic culture in our home, and grow in many good and holy Catholic friendships with other families…

That I unceasingly lead my family into a deeper union with You through daily family prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments, and by building a loving devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and all the Saints and Angels…

That I take up my duty to be the primary evangelist and catechist of my family by personally witnessing what You have done in my life, by systematically teaching each member of my family the Catholic faith, that I teach my family how to battle vice and build virtue, by ensuring my children participate in learning the faith in our parish [and Catholic school], and by demonstrating charity through the frequent practice of the Corporal Works of Mercy…

That I protect and defend my family spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically, by being vigilant against the attacks of Satan and all evil attacks, by ensuring my family is physically safe, by limiting and monitoring all media which so corrupts souls, and by guarding my family against those who are a bad influence…

That I provide for the material needs of my family by sacrificing my personal desires and working hard, by balancing my career and family duties so I never neglect my family, by teaching my family to be moderate and frugal in consumption and by being a good steward of the blessing You have bestowed on us…

That I cultivate and build the talents of our children so they may grow to serve You and Your Holy Catholic Church by shepherding my sons to mature into Catholic manhood, by shepherding my daughters to mature into Catholic womanhood, by guiding each child to discern a religious vocation and also prepare them to be productive in the world…

Blessed Trinity, I beg for the wisdom and strength to carry out my duties as a Catholic husband and father so that You might be pleased with me and might say at my Judgment, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Amen.
