There’s an old story in marketing about a company that built the perfect dog food. They used the best scientists, refined the taste, optimized the nutrition, and even focused on how the packaging would appeal to humans. But the product flopped. When asked why, one marketer gave the blunt truth: “The dogs aren’t eating the dog food.”
Maybe that’s how you feel about your faith. You’ve tried it, and it didn’t satisfy. Or maybe you’ve been around the Church so long that it all feels bland. The sacraments, the teachings, the rituals—none of it seems to move you anymore. You’re not “eating the food.”
But here’s the difference: the Catholic faith is not a man-made product. It is the living Body of Christ. The Eucharist is not a clever formula—it is divine reality. It is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the perfection of spiritual nourishment. It cannot be improved. If you’re not feeding on it, the issue isn’t the food—it’s your hunger.
Jesus puts it plainly:
“Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 18:3, RSVCE)
And again:
“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (Jn 6:54, RSVCE)
If your soul feels dry, don’t give up. Go back to the source. Ask Jesus for a new hunger. Read John 6—the Bread of Life discourse—and rediscover what the Eucharist really is. Like a newborn, approach the faith again with awe and humility. Ask God to stir up wonder in your soul.
Challenge:
Today, I will read John 6 in full and ask Jesus to help me rediscover the power of the Eucharist.
