Haunted by Dark Thoughts? Ask Jesus for Holy Forgetfulness

Because we live in a fallen world—and because our souls are wounded by original sin—our minds are never far from darkness. Thoughts intrude without warning: sinful memories, angry arguments, impure images, pointless obsessions. Some come from the past, others are stirred up by the noise of the present. In today’s tech-saturated world, the flood of images, voices, and temptations is fiercer than ever.

And the Evil One exploits it. He replays old wounds to trap you in regret. He fuels distractions to pull you away from prayer. He throws temptations before your eyes to weaken your will. Left unchecked, this cycle drains your soul and enslaves your mind. You begin to believe you can’t control your thoughts. But that is a lie.

There is a way out—and it begins with humility. Admit that you cannot fight these battles alone. Ask Jesus to cleanse your memory, quiet your mind, and close the door on what once harmed you. He promised: “Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will” (Mk 11:24, RSVCE). That includes your thoughts. You do not have to be chained to your past. You do not have to relive what God has already forgiven. You can ask Jesus for the grace of holy forgetfulness—to release what no longer serves good and to heal the wounds behind it.

Challenge: Today, when a dark or sinful thought rises, stop and pray: “Jesus, take this from me. Help me forget it.” Refuse to replay the loop. Hand it to Him, and make room for His peace.

Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Healer of hearts and the Purifier of minds. Cleanse me from memories that enslave me. Grant me the grace of holy forgetfulness so I may think only of what is true, honorable, just, and pure. Today, I will stop replaying sin and instead call on Your name. Amen.
