We continue the 52 week plan to grow in Catholic Manhood by becoming a better Catholic Son and Catholic Father. If you’d like to catch up on past weeks, see Habit 1 and Habit 2. For an overview, see here, here, here, and here.

So far, we’ve been working through the 1st of the  7 Major Habits of Catholic Sons: Major Habit 1 – Make Union with God your Ultimate Purpose

The first Major Habit is the most important. It is to realize and reconfirm that God is Number 1 in your life. For the man who desires to become a saint and be happier here and happy forever in Heaven, seeking to draw closer to God must become man’s ultimate desire.

Making union with God a man’s ultimate purpose leads a man to develop a strong aversion to evil thoughts and acts and to avoid Hell, but also fills a man with the desire to find the true and lasting happiness of spending eternity with God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, all the Apostles, and Saints and Angels forever.

Seeking Union with God (Major Habit 1) can be broken down into 6 smaller habits; so far, we’ve covered Habit 1 and Habit 2.

During the 3rd  week of the year, we will dig into Habit 3.

Habit 2Study the Life of Jesus Christ

Jesus wants you to have true and lasting happiness God’s deepest desire is that every man might choose to receive the true and lasting happiness Jesus Christ promises in His Gospel, which might be called the Gospel of Happiness. In the Incarnation, Jesus promises every man that he can share in Christ’s true and lasting happiness and dies so that every man might be saved and receive the perfection of happiness.

A Catholic man can falter in the faith – Though every Catholic man wants to be happy and Jesus promises every man true and lasting happiness, a Catholic man can falter in the faith because his Catholicism has failed to be helpful in his quest for happiness.

Knowing Jesus is the key to being a Catholic sonKnowing about Jesus is a critical first step in which a man becomes aware, has interest, and learns about Jesus: His identity, personal characteristics, family, history, personality, virtues, beliefs, and mission.

Moving beyond biographical characteristics because he has been impressed, a man moves to draw closer to Jesus by knowing Jesus  through relationship: speaking to Jesus in prayer, hearing Jesus’ response to prayers, receiving the Sacraments, being moved by God the Father and experiencing God through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Study the Life of Jesus Christ using the Daily Gospel Devotional The Every Catholic Man Daily Gospel Devotional is an excellent way to study about Jesus every day by meditating upon the Gospel from the daily Mass. The Devotional is a powerful simple tool that helps a man become more awed by Jesus Christ and take practical action through action-focused meditations that directly follow from the Gospel.

This week’s questions – Each week there is a few questions to help you meditate upon the habit of the week. Here are this week’s questions:

Can I give a 5-minute talk to another person about what is awe-inspiring about Jesus?

How will I be blessed and become a greater blessing to others by making a daily commitment this year to become more awed by Jesus Christ?

This week’s commitment Making a habit a reality requires commitment to concrete action. Here is this week’s challenge:

Take 15 minutes each day this week to begin to change your life by praying with the Daily Gospel Devotional.

Daily Prayer – During the week, pray this short prayer, or one like it, to help you grow in your commitment to more fully know, love and serve Jesus Christ, Savior of Man:

Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of Man, I am sorry that I do not know You better. I pray that You forgive me and give me the grace to hunger to know You in such a deep way that I become evermore awed by You so able to describe Your life and saving work to others. Give me the discipline to follow through on my commitment to learn about you every day of my life from here on. Amen.
