Those who met Jesus didn’t just listen politely—they were struck with awe. The Greek word akhos means “dread mixed with reverence.” The Latin tonare—“to thunder”—is where we get astonish. People who saw Jesus in action were thunderstruck. His presence, words, and power overwhelmed everyone who encountered Him.
Gentiles who sought Him out fell down in worship. The wise men traveled across deserts to find the newborn King and knelt before Him (Mt 2:11). Crowds in Tyre and Sidon saw the blind see, the lame walk, demons flee, and they glorified God (Mt 15:31; Lk 8:26-37). Even foreigners knew they were in the presence of Someone divine.
His enemies couldn’t ignore Him. Kings trembled at His birth (Mt 2:3). Satan fled at His command (Mt 4:10-11). Self-righteous accusers dropped their stones and backed away in fear and shame (Jn 8:1-11). Pilate, though powerful, was afraid and desperate to escape responsibility for condemning Him (Mt 27:14-26). Hardened soldiers mocked, then knelt. At the Cross, they finally declared, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Mt 27:54).
His closest followers were stunned at every turn. They left everything to follow Him without hesitation. They marveled as storms obeyed Him, as He walked on water, as He was transfigured before their eyes. They fell to the ground in fear and wonder. At the Resurrection, disbelief and joy collided as they saw their risen Lord (Lk 24:36-41).
Every eyewitness was moved to fear, amazement, or worship. No one met Jesus and stayed indifferent. Open the Gospels and step into their stories. See Him as they did. Be astonished. Let His majesty shake you to your core.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to see You as they saw You—with fear, wonder, and worship. Let me never stay unmoved in Your presence, but bow my heart before You as the Son of God. Amen.
