Commentary

Nearing the glorious accomplishment of His Divine Mission, Jesus prepares for His Passion in Jerusalem during Holy Week. Forceful and passionate about the salvation of souls, Jesus preaches to the crowds for the last time and offers a powerful and emotional exhortation of His Gospel. While many men confront Jesus with disbelief, some do believe, but out of fear of persecution by the Pharisees, remain quiet. Jesus withdraws into hiding, preparing for the Passion,

Full of zeal and power, Jesus loudly and forcefully summarizes His Gospel to His disciples: He confirms His authority in unity with the Father in the Trinity; He reveals He has been sent by His Father; He proclaims His unity with the Father is perfect so that the Father and Son are one, allowing those who see Him in the flesh to actually be able to glimpse God the Father; unified, but separate Persons of the Trinity, Jesus reaffirms He has been sent by God the Father to proclaim the Gospel and He speaks with the full authority of the Father.

Based on His Identity, unity with God the Father and authority from the Father, Jesus proclaims the reality of the fates of men. The world is a place tormented by the darkness of sin. Jesus reveals the light of truth, that the Father desires for men to come to Him, to believe in the Son of God, to live in the light, and to be saved. Men must hear and live out the truth Jesus proclaims through actively “keeping” His commandments (“sayings”). All men will be judged by the standard of the Word of Jesus; those who keep Jesus’ commandments will have eternal life, and those who fail to keep His words will be condemned at the Judgment on the last day.

Be awed by Jesus Christ

Reflect upon the powerful and heroic call of Christ: Son of the Father, the perfection of Charity, Jesus desires the salvation of all men; in His Human Nature, Jesus persuades the Apostles with His powerful Charisma and forceful Zeal, using highly-charged Emotion to adamantly express Himself; Divine King, He confirms His Divine Authority and that His commandments are not negotiable and must be kept by men; Divine Judge (CCC 1051, 1059), He confirms that every man’s eternal fate depends on if he keeps, or does not keep, the commandments of Jesus.

Pray for the Father to give you a vibrant Faith

Realize: Jesus asserts the absolute necessity for men to have faith in Him.

Believe: Reflect upon the Characteristics of Faith (CCC 153-165, 1814-16, 1842).

Pray: Almighty Father, help me build the Virtue of Faith so I might draw closer to Your Son, and through the Holy Spirit, more fully know, understand and live out the beauty, goodness and truth of Your Holy Catholic Church.

Be strengthened in the Spirit to keep Christ’s commandments

Realize: Jesus reveals that His word is the unshakeable standard for moral behavior and that every man will be judged based on if he keeps Jesus’ commandments: every Catholic man who believes and keeps His word will be given eternal life and men who reject His word will receive condemnation.

Believe: Reflect upon the reality that Jesus will come To Judge the Living and the Dead (CCC 678-682).

Pray: Holy Spirit, help me fear the just punishment for mortal sin in the fires of Hell and give me the Gift of the Fear of the Lord so I grow to love Jesus so much that I dread falling into mortal sin and being separated from Him, both now and in the life to come.
