Overview
Every Catholic man is called and blessed to draw closer to God through Sacred Scripture. Building a daily habit of reading the Word, guided by the wisdom of the Church and the Saints, is not optional—it is essential for salvation.
From the beginning, Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, inspired the prophets to record the Old Testament. In the fullness of time, the Word became flesh (Jn 1:14) to reveal the Almighty Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christ Himself demonstrates the necessity of knowing Scripture. In His human nature, He “learned” the Old Testament from Mary and Joseph, prayed it daily, and was formed in it through synagogue and Temple worship. He read publicly (Lk 4:17), quoted it directly, and constantly pointed men back to God’s truth preserved in the Scriptures.
The Apostles, appointed by Christ, recorded His words and works in the Gospels and New Testament, ensuring His teaching would endure. Sacred Scripture is the actual word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error (CCC 105–107). To ignore it is to ignore Christ (CCC 133).
