You ever meet a guy who just keeps doing dumb stuff? The kind of guy who sees the “Wet Paint” sign—and touches it anyway. Who gets lost, refuses to ask for directions, and ends up blaming the GPS. Who buys the “as-is” used car with no brakes because it was a “deal.” That guy isn’t cursed. He’s just missing one critical virtue: prudence.
Prudence isn’t boring—it’s basic survival. The word prudence comes from the Latin prudentia and the Greek phronēsis, meaning practical wisdom. It’s the virtue that applies reason to action. It’s not just about knowing what’s good—it’s choosing the right means to get there. Many of our biggest messes come from a lack of prudence: we act impulsively, ignore good advice, skip the hard questions, and charge ahead without thinking.
Jesus, who is the Perfection of all virtue, perfectly models prudence. He reads situations with divine clarity. He avoids traps set by His enemies. He forms His apostles with purpose. He uses Scripture to reveal the will of the Father. Jesus even speaks directly about prudence:
“You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” (Mt 16:3, RSVCE)
Jesus isn’t just calling you to be smart—He sends help. Through the Gift of Counsel, the Holy Spirit strengthens your prudence so you can better recognize and follow God’s will. You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Jesus demands much, yes—but He gives even more.
