The world is a distracting place—and it’s getting worse. With smartphones in our pockets and screens always glowing, we are bombarded every minute. Advertisers want to sell us something, influencers chase clicks, and politicians push agendas. Our phones become tools of manipulation—modern golden calves we willingly bow to. And the worst part? We keep picking them up. But distraction is not neutral. It scatters our thoughts, weakens our choices, and hardens our hearts. If we go too long without turning back to Jesus, sin tightens its grip, and we drift from the road to salvation toward spiritual ruin.
Peter’s story is our story: “Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me’” (Mt 14:29–30, RSVCE). Peter had the faith to step out, but he lost focus—and he sank. That is what happens when we let fear, noise, and distraction steal our gaze. The good news is that Jesus didn’t let Peter drown. He reached out and saved him. But the message is clear: you cannot keep your eyes on Jesus if your eyes are glued to your phone. Focus on Him, not the waves, and you will walk in freedom.
The Virtue of Orderliness, a part of Temperance, helps you resist the pull of constant distraction and keep your life rightly focused. Orderliness means putting first things first: God before screens, prayer before scrolling, people before pixels. It requires boundaries—times when the phone is put away so the heart can turn to Christ. The more you choose order, the freer you become. Distraction drains. Focus strengthens. And when your eyes are fixed on Jesus, He gives you the peace and courage to walk above the storms of life.
Challenge: Today, pay attention to how often your phone steals your focus. Set three specific times during the day when you will put it away, pause, and deliberately turn your attention to Jesus. Begin building the Virtue of Orderliness, a part of Temperance. Resurrection begins where distraction ends.
Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, help me build the Virtue of Orderliness, a part of Temperance. Teach me to put away distraction and keep my eyes fixed on You. Today, I will turn from my phone and turn my heart toward You. Amen.
