Commentary
Nicodemus, a member of the ruling Jewish council (the Sanhedrin), is emphatically told by Jesus that men must receive baptism by the Holy Spirit and that He is the Son of Man from Heaven, who will be crucified. Jesus now begins to reveal the reality of the Holy Trinity and His true identity and mission.
After describing the reality of the Holy Spirit in baptism, Jesus completes the revelation of the Most Holy Trinity by speaking of the Father and the Son. God the Father has an only Son who He has sent into the world to be the Savior of men. The Son is the light which enlightens and empowers good men who believe in Him and do good deeds (the “true”) through His grace. Each man who believes and does good works through God is a testimony (“may be clearly seen”) to the world, which gives glory to God and also secures a man’s own salvation in Jesus (Jn 3:19-21).
Jesus also gives men a deadly warning of the Judgment and the reality of condemnation. Men who rebelliously refuse to believe in Jesus, the only Son of God, are condemned and will “perish” (Greek : ἀπόλλυμι, meaning to be “utterly destroyed”). Evil men, who hate God, run from Jesus, the Light of the World, for He exposes their evil; evil men love their evil and seek to hide under the cover of darkness. God’s condemnation awaits the evil (Jn 3:19-21).
Be awed by Jesus Christ
Find peace and courage in what the Son of God reveals to give men Hope: God, the Father, loves the world that He gives His only-begotten Son up for a horrific death to return men to Him; the Son of God is the Savior, with the Divine Power to give men eternal life and save them from damnation; men, to receive the blessings in this life and next, simply need to repent, have faith and seek Jesus (the Light).
Believe, trust, and love the Most Holy Trinity
Realize: The Church celebrates the Solemnity (meaning an annual liturgical celebration of the highest rank) of the Holy Trinity each year, the Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, the celebration of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Trinity is the beautiful mystery of One God in Three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, which was revealed by Jesus and is expressed in the Creed.
Believe: Reflect upon the Trinity (CCC 232-267).
Pray: Most Holy Trinity, fill me with the Virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity so I believe in the reality and unity of the Blessed Trinity, I trust in You, and have a deep and growing love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Pray to each Person of the Holy Trinity
Realize: While God is one, it is both possible and commendable to seek to draw closer to each of the three Divine Persons: every Catholic man has been directed by Jesus to the Father in the Our Father, is drawn to the Son in prayer and the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist, and is urged to seek the constant help of the Holy Spirit to receive His Gifts and Fruits.
Believe: Reflect upon Praying to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (CCC 2664-2672).
Pray: Most Holy Trinity, help me build the Virtue of Prayer (a part of Justice) so I can turn to each of You with my prayers of thanksgiving, praise and petitions, and so I can have a beautiful filial relationship with the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
