Every man wants his life to matter. But too often, men spend their energy chasing worldly measures of success—building a résumé, climbing the career ladder, perfecting skills, earning recognition, or accumulating material possessions. These things may look impressive, but they do not make a man truly great. True greatness is not found in what the world applauds but in what Christ calls magnificent.
The word magnificence comes from the Latin magnus (“great”) and facere (“to do or make”). It literally means “to do great things.” Magnificence is a sub-virtue of Fortitude. It pushes a man beyond comfort, calling him to attempt noble and demanding deeds for God and His Church. Jesus gave Peter this vision of greatness when He said: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church” (Mt 16:18, RSVCE). Peter’s ordinary life was transformed into a magnificent mission that built Christ’s Holy Catholic Church.
That same call comes to you. To become wise in the faith. To be an astounding Catholic husband who loves his wife and sacrifices for her. To be an astounding father who raises daughters and sons to love Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church. To give your time, energy, and resources to strengthen your parish. To use your talents not for self-glory but to build Christ’s Kingdom. Think of all the work of your daily life as building a grand Cathedral for Christ. This is the path of greatness, and every man is called to walk it—not in his own power, but in Christ.
Challenge
Today, identify one great work you can begin or strengthen for Christ—whether it’s in your marriage, your children, your parish, or in building your knowledge of the faith. Take one concrete step toward Magnificence in Him.
Pray: Jesus, You are the King of Glory. Free me from wasting my life on small things which do not matter. Help me build the Virtue of Magnificence, a part of Foritude, so I can do great things in You and for You. Help me to rise above mediocrity and to live with boldness and purpose to build Your Kingdom in my daily life. Today, I will seek to do something great in Christ. Amen.
