Imitate the Mercy of Jesus

Modern culture is marked by hardness, not mercy. Indifference and self-centeredness harden hearts so men ignore the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the forgotten. Confrontation fuels retaliation, training men to score the insult, return the blow, cancel the offender, and savage reputations online. Being unmerciful may feel good for a moment, but it poisons the soul. This cycle of selfishness and retribution breeds discord, leaving men restless, unhappy, and always on guard against enemies.

Jesus reveals that mercy leads to true happiness: “Blessed [happy] are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7, RSVCE). Mercy is not optional—it is the measure of salvation. In the parable of the sheep and the goats (Mt 25:31–46), He warns that men will be judged by their mercy—feeding the hungry, giving drink, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, and going to the imprisoned. Christ Himself sets mercy as the standard for eternal judgment. He also perfectly demonstrates the Spiritual Works of Mercy: admonishing sinners, teaching the ignorant, comforting the afflicted, forgiving His enemies—even from the Cross—counseling the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently, and praying for the living and the dead.

How does a man imitate the mercy of Jesus? By living the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy (CCC 2447). The Corporal Works of Mercy care for physical suffering; the Spiritual Works of Mercy care for mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. A man who imitates Christ in mercy is blessed with healing in his family, deeper relationships, the saving of souls, and the deep happiness only God can give. Mercy is not weakness but strength.

Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, Divine Mercy, help me build the Virtue of Charity so I may have a heart of mercy and seek to imitate You by performing many Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in my daily and weekly life. Amen.
