The Catholic Church has two broadly approved liturgical forms of the Mass: The Latin Mass, which is offered using the Latin Language and is largely unchanged for centuries, and the Novus Ordo (“New Order”, also called the Mass of Paul VI) of the Mass, which was promulgated in 1969 and is the most widely-offered Mass.

The Catholic Church has an abundance of saints, some of whom are celebrated in the Novus Ordo Mass and the Latin Mass; there are differences, but on most days the same saint (s) are designated to be celebrated in both the Novus Ordo and the Latin Mass. On small number of days, neither the Novus Ordo or the Latin Mass identify saints to recall in the Mass.

To give every Catholic man the opportunity to recall and pray with the saints throughout the year, this list includes The Proper of Saints for the United States from The Roman Missal (Novus Ordo), with additional saints included from the The 1962 Roman Missal (Latin Mass, shown in italics), and, if no saint is noted in either Roman Missal, the saint for the day is included from Butler’s Lives of the Saints (shown as underlined).

For each saint identified in the Novus Ordo Mass, there are varying levels of liturgical emphasis with increasing importance, or rank: Optional Memorial, Memorial, Feast, and Solemnity. Because of the importance of Solemnities in the liturgical life of the Church, Solemnities are noted in bold.

By Canon Law (the law of the Catholic Church), the Church obligates all Catholics to attend Mass every Sunday and additional important Liturgical days for each year which are called Holy Days of Obligation (Can. 1246); however, the Church also allows conferences of bishops in each country, with approval of the Pope, to suppress some Holy Days of Obligation or transfer them to Sundays. Here is the list of all the Holy Days of Obligation in addition to Sundays by Canon Law and the generally approved shorter list of Holy Days of Obligation for the United States (marked in bold and red); there are some differences of Holy Days of Obligation in a small number of dioceses:

December 8: Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

December 25: Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)

January 1: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

January 6: Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord (typically transferred to Sunday)

March 19: Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Easter Sunday

Thursday of the sixth week of Eastertide: Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (typically transferred to Sunday)

Thursday after Trinity Sunday: Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ/Corpus Christi (typically transferred to Sunday)

June 29: Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

August 15: Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

November 1: Solemnity of All Saints

Every Catholic man should fulfill his obligations for attending Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation as designated by the conference of bishops in his country. Going further, a man can strive to grow in holiness by more frequent attendance to Mass where he can give God gratitude, worship and receive the supernatural graces in the Holy Eucharist. For example, attending Mass on all designated Solemnities, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, the Feast days of all the Apostles, the feast days of a man’s Patron Saints, attending Mass on the date of his baptism and confirmation, on his wedding anniversary and the anniversaries of when his children were baptized, attending Mass an additional day each week, or even seeking to attend Mass every day.

In addition, during his private prayer time, every Catholic man should become increasingly familiar with the Saints and seek their intercession. Information about the lives of the saints can be found in a variety of other resources including, Butler’s Lives of the Saints, The Roman Missal, The 1962 Roman Missal and numerous websites.
